Metalsmith (Lissan of Hedive)

The place is obviously a blacksmith’s shop even to those that have been struck deaf; the pile of worn-out iron junk arrayed along the rear and sides of the place is distinctive, and the smell of hot iron and charcoal say more about the place than a sign would. [1]

It isn’t a large smithy. The side and rear walls are carefully-set stone with thick timber columns supporting a roof of slate. The chimneys (plural — the shop has two forges) rise up through the roof and are topped off with a heavy screen of iron around the sides and a slab of slate across the top. [1]

The front wall seems to be relatively light wood but it was made in several sections, each of which could be raised up to provide shade and an awning, or raised higher yet to provide easier access for large pieces. They also provide light and ventilation. Most of the business is made of stone with the occasional piece of forge-worked iron for reinforcing. There is very little decoration to the shop; like most smithies, it is very utilitarian. [1]
