The Black Eel
On the far east edge of Burzyn, well past the official city limits, is The Black Eel inn. It sits in an ideal location to greet travelers from the east that don't want to pay the higher prices in town. Stables, though with no ostler, are in the back and the kitchen is to the east with a cellar beneath. Atmosphere: It smells of wet wood, stale beer, and tar. The clientele are river-barge hands, dock workers, and merchants who don't ask questions. It is loud enough to mask a conversation, but dark enough to hide a face. The Sign outside is a piece of drift-wood carved into a crude eel, painted black with tar. The Eel's bigger trade is contraband. A small sandy beach where Knael Stream meets the Ulmerian River makes an perfect covert landing location for shallow barges to drop off or pick up illicit cargo from Burzyn and the rest of Chybisa, able to be easily transported downriver to the ocean. [1]
Places
The Black Eel comprises three buildings: common, kitchen (with cellar), and stable.
Cellar
Down the ladder from the kitchen is a storage room that covers about 1/2 of the area above. The back wall, however, has a hidden door that, when released by pressing on a specific brick, swings outwards to reveal a second room for storing contraband from or destined for the river.
People
The Black Eel does not attract high-class individuals.
Gant of Mendaren (innkeeper)
Gant of Mendaren, cousin of the more reputable innkeeper of The Riverman in Onden, is a massive, balding man with forearms the size of hams. He walks with a pronounced limp (a dock accident years ago). He wipes the bar with a rag that is greasier than the table. Gant doesn't care about politics. He cares about profit and silence. [1]
