Jeweler (Josith of Asaka)

The sign outside is a small one, rather inconspicuous: “Josith, Jeweller”, in the corner of a modest storefront with two large glass windows. This in itself is unusual as, ordinarily, shopkeepers keep their wares well away from the open windows; shutters protect them when the shop is closed but most windows are just open spaces with a frame. Good glass is expensive and the two panes are very large and very clear. [1]

Inside, the walls are well-lit, mainly due to the large windows, and there are lanterns along the walls for use after dark. Several panels of wares hang from the ceiling in the middle of the room and there is a counter at the back of the room with the expensive pieces. [1]

Most of what the shop offers is necklaces and bracelets of good craftsmanship. Largely the shop seems to offer stones in settings, cut and polished; not particularly valuable but nicely done and very decorative — costume jewelry. The prices are largely under twenty pence, often under ten. There are lots of agates and jaspers, quartz in several shades, and some malachite with its bands of green shades. Pale creamy green opaque pieces mounted in copper and bronze are very nice; and a few jade pieces, too. [1]

At the counter there are more expensive pieces displayed under heavy panels of excellent glass. A well-polished piece of onyx in a setting of copper and catches the eye, as do several nice pieces of amber wrapped in brass wire. Brown-gold shimmering topaz and tourmaline set in silver, and another jade piece set in copper. No gold, but that is to be expected; the only gold deposits on Hârn are in Khuzan territory. [1]

The back room is far less orderly; it is clearly a busy workshop suitable for several workers. Several crucibles and treadle-powered grinding wheels share space with stone-topped tables and small anvils; wall racks hold hammers of many sizes, chisels and wooden templates, and delicate carving tools. The smells of beeswax, burnt charcoal and molten metals hang in the air and there are various-sized barrels all over. [1]

Josith of Asaka

The owner is an older man, heavy-set, with a full brown beard showing singe marks. He's fit and quite strong. [1]
