Miller/Millwright (Callon of Portin)
The mill is a good-sized complex inside a stone wall with both a windmill and waterwheel. The fabric blades are in good repair and it turns nicely even in a fairly gentle breeze. The waterwheel is of the undershot variety as the stream doesn't have enough drop to make an overshot wheel possible. [1]
The equipment isn’t new, but it is clearly well-maintained. The noise was considerable with the grinding of the millstones themselves, the creaks of the axles and the occasional squeaks from the bearings. The windvanes and waterwheel power different sets of grinding stones. The entire tower section could rotate on heavy bearings, pushed by wooden bars protruding from the inner wall. [1]
The bread from the mill is of the coarse variety but quite good and he counts the Earl as a frequent customer. It is scarcely more than cracked rye and barley, with a bit of good wheat flour to hold it together and a taste of honey; more for the peasantry than knights. [1]
Inside are the family quarters, large and spacious but poorly lit, like most Hârnic homes. It smells of the people and the packed dirt floor and the animals and the lit fireplace and the pot bubbling over it. Several chickens cluck as they run in and out but stay out of the adjacent mill room separated by two stairs up to it. Inside the room is the kitchen and fireplace, sleep pallets for several people, the big main table, and shelves and cabinets for storage. There are several large books on one shelf. [1]
