Wylain (Larani chapter house)

From "In Genin's Footsteps" by Julian Verdreth, 715 TR: [1]

I recommend making camp at Wylain a couple miles further. It’s a chapter house for the Order of the Lady of Paladins, with a sizable village around it. They have extensive fields, a decent inn, and it would be difficult to imagine better security than dozens of Laranian knights in the area. The Knight-Commander there has been a decent enough sort on my trips. The view from the top of their fine stone keep is pretty impressive.

From Wylain it’s about a league to Ledyne.

Wylain is clearly a large estate, with extensive fields and the marks of many horses all over the roads. The stone wall marking the estate grounds is old and well-maintained, and tall enough that even those on horses can not see over the top. [2]

It bespeaks of both power and wealth to have such a wall constructed and running along the road for nearly a third of a mile then back from the road for a good hundred yards before reducing in height. At several places along the wall, large trees hang over and soften the harsh view, and to provide cover for watchers on platforms just inside the wall. The mere fact that they have the manpower to mount such watchposts, some 15 to 20 visible, is certainly a sign of strength but they have taken care to make their strength less obvious. [2]

The village itself lies on the other side of the road from the wall which extends further along the road than the village itself. The center of the village is right near the main gate in the wall which flanked by two guards. Inside the gate, the path bends around two angled hedges that prevent seeing further into the interior. [2]

The inn is right by the commons and clearly has the only stable in the village. The pewter tankard hanging from the sign suggests an honest pint, regulated by the Innkeeper’s Guild. [2]
